Indian variant will become dominant in the UK, top medic says

Image

WHAT IS THE INDIAN VARIANT? The B.1.617 variant contains two key mutations to the outer “spike” portion of the virus that attaches to human cells, said senior Indian virologist Shahid Jameel. The World Health Organization (WHO) said the predominant lineage of B.1.617 was first identified in India last December, although an earlier version was spotted in October 2020. The WHO has described it as a “variant of interest”, suggesting it may have mutations that would make the virus more transmissible, cause more severe disease or evade vaccine immunity. Other strains

UK opens fraud probe into Greensill-linked steelmaker

Image
LONDON: Britain’s Serious Fraud Office on Friday launched a probe into steelmaker GFG Alliance, focusing partly on links with its collapsed financier Greensill. GFG Alliance, owned by Indian-British billionaire Sanjeev Gupta, had been Greensill’s biggest customer at the time of the finance giant’s notorious collapse. GFG said it would cooperate fully with the investigation. Greensill’s spectacular implosion threatens 50,000 jobs at companies around the world that relied on its financing for their supply chains, including GFG. It also has rekindled debate on close ties between the upper echelons of British politics and finance, with former prime minister David Cameron quizzed by lawmakers on his Greensill lobbying role this week. “The SFO is investigating suspected fraud, fraudulent trading and money laundering in relation to the financing and conduct… of companies within the Gupta Family Group Alliance, including its financing arrangements with Greensill Capital UK Ltd,” the SFO

Britain to adapt vaccine rollout to tackle Indian variant

Image
LONDON: Britain could accelerate its vaccine rollout in areas where a highly infectious coronavirus variant first detected in India has emerged, a move meant to prevent it from derailing a planned economic reopening. The UK has delivered one of the world’s fastest inoculation campaigns, giving a first shot to almost 70% of the adult population and a second to 36%, helping to reduce infection rates and deaths. But the emergence of the highly infectious B.1.617.2 variant in parts of northern England and London has threatened a planned full reopening due to take place in June, prompting a rethink on ways to speed up the vaccination drive. The next stage of relaxation of restrictions, where people will be formally permitted to hug again, meet in small groups indoors and travel internationally, is taking place on Monday. While shots are now available nationally to anyone over the age of 38, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said that in areas where the Indian variant of concern has been

Huge Titanic replica to open as Chinese tourist destination

Image
BEIJING: The Titanic is being brought back from the deep, more than a century after its ill-fated maiden voyage, at a landlocked Chinese theme park where tourists can soon splash out for a night on a fullscale replica. The project’s main backer was inspired to recreate the world’s most infamous cruise liner by the 1997 box office hit of the same name — once the world’s top-grossing film and wildly popular in China. The original luxury vessel, the largest of its time and branded “unsinkable” by its owners, has become a byword for hubris ever since it plunged into the depths of the Atlantic in 1912 after striking an iceberg, leaving more than 1,500 people dead. Investor Su Shaojun says he was motivated to finance the audacious, 260-metre-long (850-foot-long) duplicate to keep memories of the Titanic alive. “I hope this ship will be here in 100 or 200 years,” Su said. “We are building a museum for the Titanic.” It has taken six years — longer than the construction of the original
