ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was moved on Wednesday against the government’s possible move to bring in a presidential ordinance to amend rules of the parliamentary panel tasked with deciding nominees for the posts of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). A petition moved in the apex court states that the government wants to appoint CEC and two members from Sindh and Balochistan of its choices by way of amending rules of the panel, which now required a two-thirds majority for the purpose. It submitted that the government is trying to replace the word “two-thirds majority” with the “simple majority”, which it said would be a violation of Article 213 and 218 of the country’s Constitution. The federal government, the ECP secretary, and the Ministry of Law have been impleaded as respondents in the petition. MULTAN: Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi reached to the shrine of Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam on Wednesday and inaugurated the 706th annual Urs of the Sufi saint, ARY News reported. The three-day Urs of the revered Sufi saint will start today i.e. January 1st and will continue upto January 3. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who is spiritual seat holder of the shrine, he opened the Urs celebrations with shower to the Mazar with rosewater. Later, he will address a gathering of the devotees of the Sufi shrine. On third days a conference will be held to be addressed by prominent scholars and the Urs will end with  concluding prayers. LAHORE: A petition challenging the recent increase in the prices of petroleum products was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday. The federal government, Oil and Gas Regularity Authority (OGRA) have been made respondent in the plea. The petition states that the federal government increased the prices of petrol, diesel and other petroleum products for the month of January, despite decrease in its prices at the international market. It says the OGRA is collecting more than 17 per cent sales tax on the sale of petroleum products. The petitioner, thus, has pleaded with the court to declare the recent increase in the fuel prices as illegal and unconstitutional and issue directives for the authorities concerned to reduce the prices. KARACHI: The Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations will also remain closed in Sindh on Wednesday (today) pointing out the extent of the gas crisis in the province. It is to be mentioned here that the CNG stations in Karachi and other areas were opened four days in a period of 15 days. The households in Karachi and other parts of Sindh also facing gas shortage and the issue of low gas pressure despite the gas utility’s claims of supplying the fuel to its domestic consumers. The low pressure of gas has been reported at Karachi’s SITE, Lyari, Nazimabad, North Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and other localities. The CNG stations were supposed to reopen today, but again the closure schedule has been changed by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). A SSGC spokesperson said that the decision has been taken owing to the shortage of gas in the system, adding that they were facing difficulties to meet the gas demand of domestic consumers. ISLAMABAD: Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is expected to arrive in Islamabad on January 2, on a day-long visit, ARY News reported on Wednesday, citing sources. KARACHI: The Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations will remain closed in Sindh for consecutive 48 hours, as the gas crisis further deepen in Sindh, ARY News reported. The CNG stations were supposed to reopen today, but again the closure schedule has been changed by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). A SSGC spokesperson said that the decision has been taken owing to the shortage of gas in the system, adding that they were facing difficulties to meet the gas demand of domestic consumers. The CNG filling stations remained open for only four days in last 15 days of December. On the other hand, due to gas load shedding export orders in Karachi are being badly affected. KARACHI: Police authorities have ordered the department to prepare a list of dangerous and dilapidated structures in city after a six-storey building collapsed in Karachi on Monday, ARY News reported. Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Nabi Memon in an official order to the DIGs and SSPs has directed them to prepare a list of dilapidated buildings in their concerned areas, sources said. The DSPs and SHOs have also been issued orders over the matter. The AIG has issued orders to police officers that the prepared list of dangerous buildings should also be dispatched to the deputy commissioners of concerned districts. Moreover, the list should also be provided to concerned departments and the security branch of the office, the order said. KARACHI: Commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shallwani has announced to lift ban on pillion riding in Karachi on the New Year’s eve over the directives of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, ARY News reported on Tuesday. In his statement to the media, Iftikhar Ali Shallwani said the ban on pillion riding is being lifted following orders of Sindh chief minister. He asked citizens to exhibit responsibility by celebrating the new year in a civilised way.
