SBP receives $1.3bn from Chinese banks

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has received $1.3 billion as loan disbursements from Chinese banks this week, the central bank announced in a post on Tuesday.

“SBP has received $1.3 billion as GOP loan disbursements from Chinese Banks this week. This brings the total amount of official inflows received since 23rd June 2020 to around $3 billion,” the bank said.

Last week, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) annoinced that it had received one billion dollars – 500 million dollars each from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

The ADB approved a $500 million loan to help the country tackle the ongoing coronavirus and strengthen the health sector, while the World Bank approved a $500 million loan to help improve the healthcare and education systems.

Meanwhile, the central bank said the country’s current account deficit (CAD) turned into a surplus of $13 million by May 2020 against a deficit of $530 million in April 2020 and $1004 million in May 2019.

On a cumulative basis, the current account deficit narrowed by 73.6 per cent to $3.3 billion during Jul-May FY20 from $12.5 billion during the same period last year, the State Bank said.

CTD kills terrorist of banned outfit in Karachi

KARACHI: A terrorist of a banned outfit was killed in an exchange of fire with the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Karachi, ARY News reported on Wednesday. According to details, the CTD met an encounter with a terrorist at the Hawks Bay road and managed to arrest him in injured condition. The injured terrorist was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his bullet wounds during treatment. According to in-charge CTD Mazhar Mashwani, the dead terrorist was identified as Saeed Loha and belonged to a banned outfit. The accused fled Afghanistan after killing of his accomplice in 2016, Mashwani added. The CTD officials also recovered two Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) which were later diffused by Bomb Disposal Squad. CJ IHC orders govt, opposition to build consensus on ECP appointments

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Justice Athar Minallah has given time to the federal government to build consensus with the opposition over the appointments of the two members in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), ARY News reported on Tuesday. The high court resumed the hearing of the case related to the appointments of ECP members on two seats as the secretary of the National Assembly (NA) sought 10 days for submitting its reply in the previous hearing. During the hearing, CJ IHC Justice Athar Minallah remarked every committee has powers to legislate own rulers.
