UCH SHARIF: In a tragic incident, a six-year-old girl died after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs in Uch Sharif city of Punjab on Tuesday, ARY News reported. GENEVA: Countries with significant active spread of coronavirus must prevent amplifying events, as opening up without the virus being under control would be a “recipe for disaster”, the World Health Organization said on Monday. Karachi grenade attack case registered at CTD

KARACHI: A case of grenade attack over Mominbad police station has been registered against unknown attackers, ARY News reported on Tuesday. The case was registered at the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on the complaint of the station head officer (SHO). Earlier on Monday, two officials sustained minor injuries in a grenade attack by unidentified assailants near Mominabad police station in Karachi. A senior police officer had told media that unidentified men hurled a grenade on the gate of Mominabad police station, however, the timely response by on-duty officials had foiled the attack. The attackers, however, managed to flee from the scene. No death was reported in the incident, however, two policemen sustained minor injuries while jumping off the range of grenade fragments, said senior superintendent police (SSP) Fida Hussain. SC fixes appeal against SHC verdict in sugar commission report

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has fixed appeal of the federal government against invalidating sugar commission inquiry report for hearing, ARY News reported on Tuesday.  The federal government had challenged Sindh High Court’s (SHC) decision of nullifying the report in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. A three-member bench of the SC will take up the plea on tomorrow. The bench includes Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Ijazul Ahsan. On August 17, Sindh High Court (SHC) had nullified the sugar inquiry commission and its report and had ordered authorities concerned to conduct a fair inquiry into the matter. Zoom shares soar as earnings rocket

Zoom shares soared on Monday after the video-meeting service reported that quarterly revenue rocketed as its ranks of users more than quadrupled. The Silicon Valley-based company that has become a popular way to work, learn or socialize during the pandemic said it made a profit of $186 million on revenue of $663.5 million in the quarter that ended on July 31. That compares with a net income of $5.5 million in the same quarter a year earlier. “Organizations are shifting from addressing their immediate business continuity needs to supporting a future of working anywhere, learning anywhere, and connecting anywhere on Zoom’s video-first platform,” founder and chief executive Eric Yuan said in an earnings release. Four more people die of coronavirus, 300 test positive

ISLAMABAD: The coronavirus claimed four more lives across the country in the past 24 hours, taking the number of people succumbing to the highly contagious disease to 6,298. According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 300 people tested positive for the contagion during this period, bringing the national tally of cases to 296,149. As many as 20,882 samples were tested, out of which 264 turned to be positive. SYDNEY: Australia’s second-most populous state Victoria, the epicentre for COVID-19 infections in the country, on Tuesday reported its lowest rise in virus-related deaths in two weeks as a second-wave outbreak eases. Victoria said five people died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the lowest one-day rise since Aug. 15, while 70 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a seven-week low. The fall in the number of new cases comes as the state capital Melbourne begins its fourth week of a six-week lockdown that sees residents confined to their homes, a nightly curfew imposed and large parts of the state economy ordered to close. The restrictions are set to be relaxed later this month, with State Premier Daniel Andrews scheduled to detail the timetable for easing curbs on Sunday. Blast at CNG station injures five in Karachi

KARACHI: At least five people were injured on Tuesday in a blast at compressor room of a compressed natural gas (CNG) station  in Nazimabad, area of Karachi, ARY News reported. According to rescue sources, the blast occurred near Board Office Nazimabad, adding, all the injured were shifted to to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medical treatment. The sources said the blast took place at a compressor room  of the CNG station, injuring five including operator of the station. Two motorcycles were also baldy damaged in the incident. The identification of the injured could not be established. In a separate incident of the same nature that place in Karachi, on March 24, last year, at least two person were killed and four left wounded in a cylinder explosion at the  CNG  filling station. KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday heard a petition against Pakistan People’s Party MNA Shazia Marri over allegedly holding fake degree, ARY News reported.  As per details, the PPP lawmaker of the lower house of the parliament has been accused of holding fake degree. ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will take up on Tuesday (tomorrow) appeals of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain Safdar against their conviction in the Avenfield reference. The court will also take up the PML-N supremo’s appeal against his conviction in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference. Nawaz’s lawyer Khawaja Haris moved two miscellaneous applications in the IHC, stating that his client can’t appear before the court tomorrow and requested exemption from personal appearance on his behalf on medical grounds. The applications submitted to the IHC registrar will be taken up along the appeals tomorrow. A two-judge bench comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani will hear the case. Punjab reports 28 new coronavirus cases, two deaths

LAHORE: Punjab has reported 28 Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 96,769, ARY News reported. According to Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department, two more people died from the virus in the last 24 hours. The number of people died from the disease in the province stands at 2,198. More than 943,160 samples have been tested to diagnose the presence of COVID-19 thus far, according to a statement of the health department The number of people recuperating from the infection in the province has passed 92,000. It is pertinent to mention here that the coronavirus cases are on the decline in Pakistan as 213 new infections were detected across the country over the last 24 hours, lifting the national tally of overall cases to 295,849. Rawal Dam level surges to red mark, spillways to open today

ISLAMABAD: The water level at Rawal Dam has surged to red mark and the reservoir management has decided to open spillways of the dam, ARY News reported on Monday. Rawal Dam authorities in a statement announced opening of the spillways at 11:00 am today (Monday). “Around 6000 cusecs of water will be discharged from the lake,” according to the administration. “Rawal Dam reservoir has maximum capacity of 1752 feet water conservation, while present water level at the dam has been 1751.9 feet,” the dam management said. “After opening of the spillways the water level at Soan river will rise and water could overflow from the banks of the stream,” the dam administration said. Sindh wants Centre to announce loan, tax waiver for rain-hit farmers

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Monday demanded of the federal government to announce agriculture loan and tax waiver for rain-hit farmers of the province. Agriculture Minister Ismail Rahoo said in a statement that the provincial government declared 20 districts of the province calamity-hit due to the devastation caused by recent rains. PESHAWAR: Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Peshawar service has been reopened for the public, said spokesperson Trans Peshawar on Monday, ARY News reported.  The service which was temporary halted on 9th and 10th Muharram now has been restored for the general public. ISLAMABAD: The government has so far disbursed soft loans amounting to over Rs 260 million among 552 female entrepreneurs under the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) of Prime Minister’s Kamyab Jawan Programme. “It constitutes 30 per cent of the total disbursed loans which are amounting to one billion rupees. KARACHI: A fire that erupted at godowns near Cheel Chowk in Lyari has been doused, ARY News reported on Monday. According to a fire brigade officials, six fire tenders reached the spot after getting informed about the fire and brought it under control. A three-year-old girl in Taiwan was caught up in the strings of a kite and lifted high into the air before being rescued unharmed. The unidentified girl was taking part in a kite festival on Sunday in the seaside town of Nanliao when she became entangled in a giant, long-tailed orange kite and was hoisted off the ground by several metres. Local reports suggest a group of people were able to catch her when she fell to the ground, with screams and yells filling the scene. She has been reported safe following the terrifying incident. News reports suggest she was understandably frightened, but suffered no physical injuries other than some scratches to her face. According to Taiwan News, she was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident and was joined by her mother.
